Basic First Aid for Specific Injuries
Here is some helpful guidance for the following types of injuries. Some of these injuries can be very serious so you should always seek professional medical assistance.
Eye Injury First Aid
Without applying pressure, place a cold compress on the eye and give over the counter pain medication such as Tylenol, Advil or Motrin if appropriate. Keep in mind, however, that eye injuries can be very serious, so be sure to get the affected person to a medical professional as soon as possible.
Head Injury First Aid
Depending upon the severity, head injuries can be extremely dangerous. Seek medical attention right away in all cases, but especially if you detect a change in the person’s alertness, breathing or overall behavior.
Knee Injury First Aid
Knee injuries are common with people of all ages. It is best to have the injured person sit and keep the knee still if possible. To reduce swelling, use ice packs and give Tylenol or Advil for pain if appropriate. If you can, wrap up the knee with a bandage to limit its motion. Seek medical attention right away.
Broken Bone Injury
Any fractured (broken) bone will need medical attention quickly. It is best to keep a broken bone still any way you can while medical assistance is obtained.
Get Help When You Need it
When injuries occur, it can be a scary situation. By having basic first aid knowledge, you can assist people who have been hurt until they can be seen by a medical professional.
While possessing first aid skills is helpful, always know your limits. If you are not trained as a professional medical provider, do not hesitate to seek help for the injured person as soon as you can.
